Or DLAs, as Marc Cantercalls them.
I got an email from Marc on Tuesday giving me some details on Tribe.net's new'container beta'.
In Marc's words: "...So the time has come when Tribe.net has finally gotten its next generation acttogether.Tomorrow they're putting out a beta release of their new profile page, which now acts like a DLA becauseyou can plug in any sort of external module. They're starting off with:
- Amazon Wish Lists
- De.licio.us accounts
- External Blog feeds
- In fact ANY RSS feed
- But they'll be more later
- And they still have their Tribecast blog module – which isbeing worked on – now…"
I've been talking about various people and friend aggregators here on The Social SoftwareWeblog. Will Tribe.net be keeping pace wit MSN and Yahoo! in this slow but sure move in this DLA direction? How will other SNS plays like Multiply measure up?
Digital Lifestyle Aggregators
Tagging as a Social Phenomenon
We've talked about tagging in general andDel.icio.us in particular.
Links are the bestI am finding, gardening, growing, weeding, and pruning them daily. Sharing them constantly, realtime, via IM, email, and blogs.
I still want my links, photos, friends, recommendations, reviews, presentations, peer review papers, ideas, concepts, etc to be shared right through my fully aggregated, fully tabbed, low-profile IM-centric environment. I want to clickon a name and see what's new with my friends, family members or business cohorts without even bothering them.
Ubiquitous connections between what i post, tag, mark, and find at Flickr, Del.icio.us, Technorati Tags, Furl, Spurl, CiteULike, Connnotea, etc. Iwant explicit permissions. Let me be private to certain people, anonymous to some, and available to others at the'thing' levelimages, photos, documents, links, etc.
What do you want? Are you getting what you want and/or need with any of the currently available tagging and sharingsocial software systems?
Flickricious, or Flickrlicious?
Over on SiliconValleyWatcher, Tom Foremski ponders: "...how large of a population is needed before a community starts exhibiting spontaneous, unpredictable, aggregate behaviors..."
He mentions one of my favorite YASNS-Ted Rheingold's Dogster (which has been nominated for a Webby award btw, congrats Ted!)-as an example of a group that gained mass aberrant behaviors somewhere between 500 to 15,000 members.
When i take my daily walks along the river i often find myself talking to the animals first before even thinking about addressing their two-legged counterparts. I actually have to remind myself to say 'hey' to my four-legged friends' friends...
Yahoo! 360 and MSN Spaces
I haven't tried out MSN Spaces but am currently dabbling with Yahoo! 360 and liking the 'blast' feature of 360.
Edward C. Baig over at USAToday has been kicking the tires on both services and offers a fairly extensive, personal impression of these two services. He says that offerings are: "...Yahoo everything this, MSN everything that..."
Anyone using MSN Spaces? Impressions? Baig thinks that MSN Spaces is off to a head start.
Bolt.com
Ah, online social networking. Right now thereare 17, 827 people online over at the Bolt.com 'hang out'. Where categories range from Movies & TV to Sex &Dating, Gaming, Music, Style, Sports, American Idol, AIM Icons, Quotes, Ringtones, Game Revolution, Quizzes,Horoscopes, and TAG.

Authenticity is at the core of all that we do…"
Bolt is located in Soho, NYC and is led by Aaron Cohen, CEO. They recently released a study on' Youth Happiness' (pdf file link) with the subtextthat it "Turns out High School and College Kids Are Actually Pretty Happy" with 67% of 15-22 year olds countingthemselves as happy to very happy. Who knew?
A ‘Social’ search on iTunes
What are current iTunes music selections saying?
Social Distortion, SocialCombat, Social Unrest, Social Disease, Not that Social, Social Crimes, Social Deviantz, Confessions of a Sociopathic SocialClimber, and Broken Social Scene were just the first ninereturns that i found on a 'social' search of iTunes.
Don't know what i expected, but these did make me ponder our 'social' state.
Up next came The Social HarpEarlyAmerican Shape-Note Songs. A bit different than the previous nine. Ever been to a 'Shape-Note' or 'Sacred Harp' singing camp?
Catch27.com, “Your social life is a game.”
Bitches, brains, freaks, geeks, jocks, rebels, sluts, stars, wiseasses, bloggers, and mvps are the eleven'categories' of players on Catch27.com. Pick your own trading card category andyou're off. Don't like your friends? Trade up.
Hey you can spend 99 cents and buy three new friends by purchasing an official Catch27 Wax Pack.
Why 27 you might ask? Well, Catch27 has… 27 answers including:
-
Kurt Cobain died at 27.
-
Jimi Hendrix died at 27.
-
Janis Joplin died at 27.
-
Pi splits at the number 27.
-
etc.
Pitt News writer Leigh Remizowski thinks that Catch27 has a" wicked twist". Chris Lastrapes, writing for The Collegian Online at theUniversity of Tulsa, says that one of the coolest things about Catch27 is a lovely link titled "Annihilate Yourself Offthe Landscape." Don't we wish more YASNS offered an easy way to erase our vapor trails from their services?
Is Elle Magazine editor E. Jean Carroll's Catch27 successful as "a satireon social lives in general"? And has anyone tried her GreatBoyfriends.comand GreatGirlfriends.com sites where exs recommend their exs? Just howsocial are the bulk of ' social software's YASNS?
Read any ‘fake’ or ‘character’ blogs lately?
Steve Rubel is tracking them and Shel Holtz offers his opinion on them at great length.
Cartoon characters have them. Gourmet Station has one. Blogs certainly offer a unique opportunity to express the 'voice' of an organization and invite readers into a conversation. There's an interesting conversation taking place in the comments of Steve Rubel's 'fake blog' post.
Why create a 'character' to speak for your group, company, or organization, when you can have a group of characters blog as themselves? Is there a future in character blogs? Heck, there sure is a 'present' in them as their numbers actually abound.
Mark Pincus steps down as CEO of Tribe
What will Mark do next? He says he is going to be actively involved with Tribe and that he's less of a marketing guyand more of a software person but… Mark has an undying entrepreunerial spirit, so we'd best keep a close eye. He sayshe'll be doing more flying andbiking.
Something to do with the peopleweb that's forsure.
At play in the fields of Yahoo! 360
While I am not overly enamoured of Yahoo! 360°'s 'simple-mentation' of the blog, i am playing with it in it's semi-crippled state alongwith associating flickr photos, technorati tags, and my spring 'haitech haiku'. Simple format, not so tightlyintegrated yet with things I've been using via Yahoo! for quite some time nowlike Messenger, and Groups.
I don't actually use Yahoo! Messenger itself but integrate my friends who use AIM, Yahoo!, etc. via Adiummy IM aggregator of choice for the Mac. So of course i want integrationbetween My IM aggregator and Yahoo! 360°.
I've been receiving a number of requests to befriend some of my readers here on the social software weblog and to invite them to Yahoo!360. I have invited a few of my readers with whom I am more familiar, and with whom i have corresponded in the past viacomments or tips.
Something is not quite right with the 'invite' system on 360° though as the invitations don't seem to be making it tothe invitees. And, if I try to re-invite someone, 360° then notifies me that i have already invited them and gives mean error message. Hm. As a result, I have about 14 outstanding invites in my 'outbox' that i cannot re-send, and that icannot seem to delete.
If anyone at Yahoo! 360° is listening, i would love some feedback on this. Thanks!

Barry Diller Selling ZeroDegrees?
In a 'Market Whisper' SAP INFO says, that Edittech International says, that Barry Diller found a buyer to take ZeroDegrees off hishands?
As Yahoo steps into Social Networking is Diller really stepping out?
Is there any truth to this 'whisper'?
Yahoo! 360
Randy Farmer invited me to startplaying with Yahoo! 360º last evening and I've been accepting and issuing invites on and off all day today.
This morning when I began to poke around my new 360º site I suddenly received a preponderance of invitations to chatfrom people who want to jump onto the Yahoo! 360º Beta. Wow.
So far, some things work well and others are somewhat primitivei.e. posting images in blog posts has a way to go.But, the social vibes are swarming around Yahoo! right now andthe 360º team is positive, ready and waiting for input.
Have you jumped onto the 360º beta yet? Impressions?
CanYouConnect.com for sale on eBay
Back in September, 2004 I wrote about anew social networking service that combines personal and professional networkingCan You Connect.
Well today an anonymous tipster notified me that CanYouConnect.com is up forsale on eBay.
The eBay listing specifies that you are bidding on "a completely functional and truly exceptional social networkingweb site. It is by far one of the most robust and feature filled social networking sites on the web. The site has beencompletely tested and has been running for over a year without any problems."
Zero bids, and it appears that bidding ended within twenty minutes of start time.
Craigslist in Space
The final frontier? Or, the next stop for ad-based YASNS?
Deep Space Communications Network sent over one hundred thousand craigslist ad postings into space.
Hm, I'm looking for a bunch of new bloggers here on Weblogs, Inc. Maybe I should place some craigslist ads to coincidewith the next blast into space of more craigslistads?
