On the Close of the ‘Perfect Pitch’ Competition…

Posted on April 16, 2004 by Judith Meskill
Categories:social networking.

Well I am off to Carnegie Hall this evening to see Caetano Veloso - the first'non-classical' artist to be asked to present a 'Perspectives Series' at Carnegie Hall.

sound Of Caetano Veloso, David Byrne shared this:

"Caetano's work gives one a sense of a world in which there are nodes of common intellectual and sensual pleasureshere and there scattered around the globe - a network of "others" who connect to one another and to us but who at thesame time articulate something unique to their place of origin."

The entries are all in for the 'Perfect' Corporate Weblogging 'Elevator Pitch' Competition andnow the work of the judging panelistsbegins!

I cannot help but substitute Weblogging for Caetano's work in David Byrne's above quote - nowthat would be a "Perfect Pitch"... (-:=

Social Spamming…

Zero Degrees style…

Yesterday on Stowe Boyd's Working Model weblog a post appeared Connect with me in ZeroDegrees? and Ithought, hmmm that looks familiar.

Wait a minute Stowe hardly posts at A Working Model anymore, heposts over at Get Real… Well, in addition to unknowingly spammingeveryone in his address book it appears Stowe also spammed his own Working Model Weblog. [Stowe explains how and why inhis New Zero Degrees' Outlook Plug-in: I've SociallySpammed Hundreds By Mistake! post today.]

Both Stowe Boyd and Christopher Allenpublished their frustration with Zero Degrees new "let's spam your entire address book without even really notifyingyou" function… I got 'spammed' by both Stowe and Christopher yesterday, no bother really, but I was wondering what wasup…

Ross Mayfield writes about the root cause of Christopher and Stowe's woes on Many2Many and I just thought I would jump in here with a 'yikes'! Is this what happens when Barry Diller sucks in a new company under-documented functionality to boost membership by inviting all of the contacts in your address book withoutsufficient warning about what you are about to do?!?

Ross makes a good point about Zero Degrees' 320k membership vs. LinkedIn's 20M which ties in to a previous StoweBoyd post on LinkedIn's dominance in "Internet Presence" TrendIQ Social Networking "InternetPresence" with the following graph from the TrendIQsite:

linkedin_buzz

Stowe Boyd, Christopher Allen, and Ross Mayfield were all on top of this 'social spamming' item it was great totrack the near-real-time conversation on all of their weblogs… (-:=

agora

Dmitri Kramarenko, from The Computer Crime Research Center in the Ukraine, wrote a report today on Terrorism andhigh technologies.

Bank robberies, forged credit cards, and other identity theft techniques seem to be a preferred method for thefinancing of Al-Qaeda activities. Dmitri informs us that:

Terrorists, connected to Al-Qaeda, carry out tests on using the Internet and social software-hardware means to realize their cyber threats addressing the USA and Israel.

The Internet provides an agora for a plethora of groups and community activities.

veepers

Veepers are… well, different.

And now they can be found on YASNS Classmates.com and Match.com.

Check them out if you have not seen and/or heard about them already… One of those things that you have to see foryourself…

According to the Pulse site:

Pulse's patented 3D technology (Pulse Veepers™) enables you to transform a digital image into content comparable to streaming video. But unlike video, production is rapid and inexpensive. File sizes are small. Edits and modifications can be made in minutes. The characters interact. And the output is Java, requiring no plug-ins for viewing.

Pulse Veepers' clients include: IBM, Microsoft, Toyota, Coca Cola, American Greetings, FCBi, State Farm, Mattel, theHomeShopping Network, and the IRS e-file site!

Contentious Recommendations…

Posted on April 12, 2004 by Judith Meskill
Categories:social networking.

Well, these recommendations are not really contentious, but they do come from Amy Gahran's contentious.comweblog. Back on November 26, 2003, Amy recommended an article by Jim Carroll Jumping on the corporate blog wagon and this New YorkTimes article by Thom Weidlich The Corporate Blog IsCatching On.

[Another New York Times article by William O'Shea Theonline journals known as Web logs are finding favor as an efficient way to communicate within the workplace.]

On March 30, 2004 Amy posted a list of More CorporateBlogging Resources that are certainly worth a look.

Also don't forget to drop by the weblogs of our judging panelists for inspiration as many ofthem recommend excellent resources for corporate weblogging…

Web Sites May Rot Brain…

Posted on April 11, 2004 by Judith Meskill
Categories:social networking.

At least so says Vanessa Dennis writing for the Chronicle-Tribune in Marion, Indiana. While Orkut might be passe forsome, it is still a desired destination for others. Today Vanessa is on vacation and fills her Grant County, Indianacolumn with bits and pieces that she warns "may rot your brain." I found her Orkut tidbit amusing and thought I wouldshare it here with you on this ever so slow Sunday news-less day:

brainJoining Orkut Want to be a member of the latest hipster "in" group. You have to be a member of to Orkut.

Orkut is Google's answer to Friendster, only more exclusive. You can't just go and make your own profile and then find friends, you have to be invited. It is the online equivalent of a secret society.

Some people get so desperate to join Orkut that they set out to find people who already belong. These desperate people who will go unnamed resort to using Google against itself. You can find huge lists of people who find a Orkut member by searching Google and then ask a member to invite them even though they don't know them.

I don't know if it works.

According to Seth Sutel of the Associated Press, AOL's new Internet 'Reality Series' will be chronicled via weeklyupdates on "blogs" kept by the business owners who are featured in the program:

internet_startupNEW YORK (AP) It's a lot like "The Apprentice," except nobody gets fired. Hoping to capitalize on the sensational buzz around NBC's hit reality show, AOL is launching an online feature that will follow the travails of four small-business owners for their first 12 months.

"The Startup" will be featured on America Online's customized service for small-business owners, but it will also be available for any of AOL's 24 million subscribers. The feature, which is being done in cooperation with Entrepreneur Magazine, goes live on Thursday.

..."The Startup" will follow the ups and downs of four businesses: an adventure park in Colorado Springs, Colo.; a spa in New Orleans; a gourmet salsa company based in Vermont and a teenage clothing store in Corpus Christi, Texas.

Bloom Filters and Social Software…

Posted on April 9, 2004 by Judith Meskill
Categories:social networking.

In an piece titled Using Bloom Filters Maciej Ceglowski writes about the suitabilty of Bloom filters[ probabilistic algorithms] for social softwareapplications:

bloom Bloom filters are named after Burton Bloom, who first described them in a 1970 paper entitled Space/time trade-offs in hash coding with allowable errors. In those days of limited memory, Bloom filters were prized primarily for their compactness; in fact, one of their earliest applications was in spell checkers. However, there are less obvious features of the algorithm that make it especially well-suited to applications in social software.

Because Bloom filters use one-way hashing to store their data, it is impossible to reconstruct the list of keys in a filter without doing an exhaustive search of the keyspace. Even that is unlikely to be of much help, since the false positives from an exhaustive search will swamp the list of real keys. Bloom filters therefore make it possible to share information about what you have without broadcasting a complete list of it to the world. For that reason, they may be especially valuable in peer-to-peer applications, where both size and privacy are important constraints.

Maciej also includes an excellent list of references on Bloom filters at the end of this Perl.com article.

Social Spaces Sonnet…

Inspired to 'Sonnet-ize' this Social Software space this evening in hyperlinked iambic pentameter form:

shakespearea sonnet for some social spaces…

a friendster or a fraudster? this girl asks
while wading through these virtual tide pools
of YASNS where most often we wear masks
while perched upon our digital barstools.

an orkut-ster will often also be
on spoke, or ryze, or linkedin, this girl thinks
and socialtext is sometimes where we'll see
good netizens imbibing wiki drinks.

now as we blog and network day by day
and grok the flow dynamics of this place
there is some hope that soon we'll find a way
to own our signatures in cyberspace.

some situated software, shirky states,
sans scarcity, small spaces now creates… (-;=

InterActiveCorp Snaps Up Tribe.net?!? (Does Mark Pincus Know This?)

Posted on April 8, 2004 by Judith Meskill
Categories:social networking.

This has to be an error… Or perhaps an April Fool?

While rummaging through my newsfeed and tips today, I found the following quote from Mediapost.com in New Ad Models Take Flight with an intro byAdam Herman, and the sub-article in question Social Networking Promises Value of Peer-to-Peer, Viral, Behavioral,Contextual, and Search By Kate Kaye.

In which Kate Kaye says, and I quote:

Owned by TV mogul Barry Diller, InterActiveCorp has also snapped up Tribe.net, Match.com, and Evite.

HUH? Does Mark Pincus know that Barry Diller has "snapped up Tribe.net"?!?! I know that one ofBarry Diller's execs expressed an interest in the Tribe.net business model a while back around the time of announcingInterActiveCorp's plan to acquire ZeroDegrees. Does Kate Kaye have prescience? (-:=

And of course this is an error… So says Mark Pincus… But it certainly would make sense for Diller to at leastattempt to acquire Tribe.net…
